Why Your Breakfast is Making You Fat
You thought your breakfast was pumping you up for a good day?
Or more likely you were either:
a) stuffing a quick carb toast or cereal in your gob before rushing out the door
b) skipping it all together
Now I don't have an issue with fasting. I have an issue with fasting without intention. But that's a conversation for another day.
Today we need to talk about why you think your breakfast is healthy. And why it's probably not.
Sound familiar?
Every week in clinic I see new patients and they all say the same thing.
"I think I'm eating pretty healthy BUT I'm exhausted, overweight, and feeling blah in my body."
And I get it. You're doing everything you think is right. You're not eating takeaway every night. You're not smashing a block of chocolate for dinner. You're trying.
But you wake up tired. You're flat by midday. Your weight won't budge. And no matter how hard you try to stay on track, something always pulls you off it.
You feel stuck in a body that doesn't reflect the effort you're putting in. And quietly, you're starting to wonder if this is just how it is now.
It's not. I promise you it's not.
As soon as I hear those words I already know what the food diary looks like. And I know exactly why they're feeling that way.
The clients who actioned the changes I'm about to share lost between 10 and 20kg in three months.
So let's talk about where you're going wrong.
Here's what I see on nearly every food diary that lands on my desk
If any of these are on yours, we've found your problem:
Cereal and milk
Muesli with yoghurt and fruit
Toast and avocado
Weet-Bix in any which way or form
Oats
Overnight oats
Porridge
Are you shocked?
Here's the kicker. The one food group that would fix all of this is completely missing from your plate.
All these breakfast foods are loaded with carbohydrate, minimal fat, and NO protein. That sends your blood sugar soaring, which sounds great until it crashes, and it will crash. What goes up must come down. And when it does you're raiding the biscuit tin, reaching for another coffee, and wondering why you can't stop thinking about food by 10am.
The number one thing that will not only help you lose weight, but also give you more energy, muscle, libido and a better mood is PROTEIN. And breakfast is exactly where most women are falling short of it.
So what do you eat instead?
Here are my favourites:
Eggs
Eggs and bacon with avocado
Omelette
Bolognese
Chicken soup with broth
Steak and eggs
Protein shake
Smoothie with high quality protein
Yes, leftovers for breakfast are absolutely on the table. Your body doesn't know what time it is.
