Why the Scale Isn't Moving (And What to Do Instead)

Why the Scale Isn't Moving (And What to Do Instead)

You're doing everything right. Eating well, moving your body, drinking your water. And the scale hasn't budged.

So what's actually going on?

When a client comes to me with this exact frustration, I ask questions before I give answers. And what I find almost every time tells a very different story to what she expected.

You're probably not eating enough protein

The most common pattern I see is a diet that's significantly low in protein and high in carbohydrates. This keeps blood sugar unstable, hunger signals firing and your body holding onto fat rather than burning it.

Real whole food protein at every meal; eggs, meat, fish, changes this faster than almost anything else.

You're not giving it enough time

If you're weighing yourself once a week you're not seeing the full picture. Your weight fluctuates daily based on hydration, hormones, digestion and sleep. You need to weigh daily and look at the trend over 2 to 4 weeks to understand whether what you're doing is actually working.

One number on one morning means nothing. The trend means everything.

You're eating diet food instead of real food

Low calorie packaged foods, protein yoghurts, "healthy" snacks; these are not real food. They're highly processed products marketed to look like health food. And they're keeping you stuck. If it comes from a factory, it's not serving you.

But here's the thing nobody talks about

Almost every woman I see in clinic is doing the same thing.

She's feeding into her husband, partner, her kids, her career, her housework, her friendships. Into everyone and everything except herself.

And I have to have the conversation about putting your oxygen mask on first.

Because here's what I know to be true.

When you do the work on yourself, when you prioritise your own health, you innately and by default inspire the people around you to do the same. Actions speak louder than words.

If your actions are constantly feeding into everyone else and never into yourself, you're showing the people you love, that that's acceptable. You're giving your kids permission to do the same. To not look after their health. To not look after their body. To not look after their mental wellbeing.

And I get that it's hard to put yourself first. It can feel selfish. Indulgent. Like there are a hundred other things more deserving of your time and energy.

But it's a butterfly effect. And it starts with you.

The scale not moving is rarely just about food. It's about finally deciding that you matter too.
